Magic Piano

Magic Piano is a great little iPad (or iPhone) app.  Using finger touches, you play not only a melody but also HARMONY!  Even for me, an accomplished pianist, this can be quite the challenge as the difficulty progresses!  The app comes with a set of free songs to begin your musical experience.  As you complete songs, you earn "smoola" which can then be exchanged for a new, more difficult song.    There is also the option to buy more songs, but really, it's not that hard to earn smoola!  I really enjoy playing this app, and would recommend it for non-pianists as well as beginner or advanced musicians.  Here's a video of Mystery Guitar Man playing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata for his "audience."  Enjoy!

More on the jump!

Check out LIVE SCIENCE for more info!  Thank you to them for the following infographic! The daredevil's jump from 120,000 feet altitude requires the use of a space suit due to the low temperature and thin air.

GO FELIX!

Felix Baumgartner's suit and capsule
(Go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-19943590#panel12 to see details about his suit and for more details)

Felix Baumgartner's epic jump todayfrom the edge of space was a sight to behold.  I watched online as Mission Control guided him through his safety check and he then made that plunge towards the earth! Supported by a team of experts, Felix  ascended in a helium balloon to an altitude of 120,000 ft / 36,576 m (over 24 miles!). Felix become the first skydiver to go faster than the speed of sound, reaching a maximum velocity of 833.9mph (1,342km/h).  It took him just under 10 minutes to make the descent.  The last few thousand feet were negotiated by parachute.  Some highlights in the video below!

Visuwords

Visuwords™ online graphical dictionary

among the things a person could do on this site are....

  • Look up words to find their meanings and associations with other words and concepts.
  • Produce diagrams reminiscent of a neural net.
  • Learn how words associate.

When a word it entered into the seach box, an interactive node diagram ( a web of sorts) is created and connections are made to the original word in a  variety of ways.  Some examples are parts of speech, is a part of, pertains to, is a kind of to name a few. Exploration of just one word will take the user to a myriad of word adventures.  You are taken into a "universe of bouncing, rotating, vibrating meaning by pulling related words into orbit around it. The words careen off one another like balls on a billiard table until they settle down, at which point you can set them in motion again — or choose a new word."

When I entered the word "music," this is my initial graphic. As I click and explore even more connections are made. The key at the left shows what the different colored connections indicate.  Give it a try!

The Piano Guys

I have enjoyed watching and listening to The Piano Guys.  They have been together for just over a year, and have exploded in popularity on YouTube.  All are from Utah.  The group is made up of one piano player, Jon Schmidt, and one other instrumentalist, Steven Sharp Nelson, on cello.  The other three – Paul Anderson, Tel Stewart and Al van der Beek – are equally significant members of the group.  Read more about them on their website The Piano Guys.

Five guys from different walks of life with different skill sets, from different places -- each had built their own careers: a piano store owner/videographer (Paul Anderson), a music producer (Al van der Beek), a videographer/editor (Tel Stewart), a pianist (Jon Schmidt), and a cellist (Steven Sharp Nelson). But all with the same ambition: to inspire the world with the talents given them. Each met through seemingly-happenstance, but divinely-influenced circumstances. Combined, they had the tools, the passion, and the drive necessary to independently build one of the most successful music video production companies in the world. They are famous for taking their instruments (especially grand pianos) and video equipment to unbelievable places. But above all, ThePianoGuys love what they do -- and it shows. At the end of the day, they are ordinary guys that love their families and that thank God for the opportunity they have to do what they love.

Bee Gees - How Deep Is Your Love

"How Deep Is Your Love" is a pop song written and recorded by the Bee Gees in 1977 and released as a single in September. Originally intended for Yvonne Elliman, it was ultimately used as part of the soundtrack to the film Saturday Night Fever. It was a number three hit in the United Kingdom and Australia. In the United States, it topped the Billboard Hot 100 on 24 December 1977 (becoming the first of six consecutive US number-one hits) and stayed in the Top 10 for a then-record 17 weeks. The single spent six weeks atop the US adult contemporary chart. It is listed at # 20 on Billboard's All Time Top 100.[1] Alongside "Stayin' Alive", it is one of the group's two tracks on the list. The song was covered by Take That for their 1996 Greatest Hits album, reaching number-one on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks.

The song was ranked #366 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In a British TV special shown in December 2011, it was voted "The Nation's Favourite Bee Gees Song" by ITV viewers.

THE BAR CODE!

October 7th marks the 60th anniversary of the barcode. SIXTY years! This technology has been around for a long time! From a pack of gum to education in the classroom to coupons for the grocery store, barcodes are everywhere!

I have recently been experimenting with uses for QR (quick response) Codes in the classroom. I am coming up with a ton of ideas! The use of 1:1 student iPads in our school will soon provide an opportunity for me to try out some of these activities! Here is an infographic with some fun facts about this technology.

To see the infographic, scan this barcode below with your ipad or smartphone. You will need a QR Reader (free) to do this. If you don't have a device that can scan, click on Wasp Barcocde Technologies to access the infographic.

FALL COLORS....De Colores!!

Fall Colors

A special season’s here again
One I love so much
For colors are their most brilliant
Like the strokes of an artist’s brush

Sunsets are their brightest
As fall flowers take a bow
Everything is changing
There’s a chill in the night time now

There’s earthy sweetness in the air
Apples plopping to the ground
Colors are changing everywhere
Drying leaves make a swishing sound

We know just around the corner
Holidays are near
And as that time approaches
Excitement fills the air!
Marilyn Lott

The past few days, I've been snapping some shots of the colors found here in south-central South Dakota.  Enjoy the beauty while you listen to "De Colores", sung by Joan Baez.

Johnny Appleseed Day!!!

Today is Johnny Appleseed Day!

Johnny Appleseed was a legendary American who planted and supplied apple trees to much of the United States of America. Many people think that Johnny Appleseed was a fictional character, but he was a real person.

Johnny was a skilled nurseryman who grew trees and supplied apple seeds to the pioneers in the mid-western USA. Appleseed gave away and sold many trees. He owned many tree nurseries in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Illinois, and Indiana, where he grew his beloved apple trees and then sold or traded them. Although he was successful with his trees, Appleseed lived a simple life. He was a vegetarian, wore raggedy clothes, and was a very religious man. It is said that as Johnny traveled, he wore his cooking pot on his head as a hat (this may or may not be true)!

Johnny Appleseed was born in Leominster, Massachusetts, on September 26, 1774. His real name was John Chapman, but he was called Johnny Appleseed because of his love for growing apple trees.

Johnny died at the age of 70; he is buried in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He had spent 50 years growing apple trees and traveling to spread his precious trees around his country so that people could enjoy apples. In 1966, the US Postal Service designed a 5 cent stamp honoring Johnny Appleseed.

Speaking of the Sound Of Music...

Have you seen this flash mob yet? More than 200 dancers were performing their version of "Do Re Mi", in the Central Station of Antwerp. With just 2 rehearsals they created this amazing stunt! Madison Rising

"Madison Rising brings great rock music back to the forefront of popular culture. With songs ranging from the guitar heavy opening track "Right To Bear," to the hauntingly epic sounds of "Honk If You Want Peace," to the beautiful violins of "Hallowed Ground," it is clear that this band is on a mission to not only make great music, but also send a message that American culture is alive and well."

I first heard this band the other day when I listened/watched their rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner. Their first album was launched in October, 2011. They have several other songs recorded as well, all with a positive focus on our country. Read more about them at Madison Rising. There are several of their videos located on KickStarter as well. Take a moment to listen to their rendition of our National Anthem.

Psalm 54

Psalms 54:3-4, 5, 6-8

3 Arrogant men are attacking me, bullies hounding me to death, no room in their thoughts for God.Pause

4 But now God is coming to my help, the Lord, among those who sustain me.

5 May their wickedness recoil on those who lie in wait for me. Yahweh, in your constancy destroy them.

6 How gladly will I offer you sacrifice, and praise your name, for it is good,

7 for it has rescued me from all my troubles, and my eye has feasted on my enemies.

The Sound Of Music

Even now, my most favorite musical EVER is The Sound of Music! I think that I identify with Maria! Drawn to religious life, yet discovering that God had different plans! As a young girl, and even in my college years, I was lead towards Franciscan religious life, yet as all who know me realize, that did not come to fruition!

(the following via Wikipedia)
The Sound of Music (1959) is a musical with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. It is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Many songs from the musical have become standards, such as "Edelweiss", "My Favorite Things", "Climb Ev'ry Mountain", "Do-Re-Mi", and the title song "The Sound of Music".

The original Broadway production,[1] starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel, opened on November 16, 1959; the show has enjoyed numerous productions and revivals since then. It was adapted as a 1965 film musical starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, which won five Academy Awards. The Sound of Music was the final musical written by Rodgers and Hammerstein; Hammerstein died of cancer nine months after the Broadway premiere.

Details of the history of the von Trapp family were altered for the musical. The real Georg Ludwig von Trapp did live with his family in a villa in Aigen, a suburb of Salzburg, and Maria von Trapp had been sent to be a tutor to one of the children. Lindsey and Crouse altered the story so that Maria was governess to all of them. The names and ages of the children were also altered. The von Trapps spent some years in Austria after Maria and the Captain married and, when they left Austria after the Anschluss, they went by train to Italy and then traveled to London and the United States.[4] To make the story more dramatic, Lindsey and Crouse had the family, soon after Maria and the Captain's wedding, escape over the mountains to Switzerland on foot.

The website for The Trapp Family Lodge has more insights into the REAL life of Maria.

Here's a compilation of the songs from the musical for you to enjoy:)

Reinventing the Lightbulb!!!

"The electric light has caused me the greatest amount of study and has required the most elaborate experiments.... Although I was never myself discouraged or hopeless of its success, I can not say the same for my associates.... Through all of the years of experimenting with it, I never once made an associated discovery. It was deductive... The results I achieved were the consequence of invention - pure and simple. I would construct and work along various lines until I found them untenable. When one theory was discarded, I developed another at once. I realized very early that this was the only possible way for me to work out all the problems.
----- From "Edison The Man And His Work" by George S. Bryan 1926
Paraphrased Edison quote with respect to his work on perfecting the light bulb:

Ever thought someone could re-invent the light bulb? Well, someone has! And it can be controlled from your Smart Phone!!

Fifth Grade Bloggers!!!

This year we started a pilot program with out 5th grade classes - BLOGGING! Both Fifth Grade Teachers and I are collaborating on this adventure with our students! A blog is a special type of online journal, in the form of a web site, that can be created and easily updated using a web browser. The exciting thing about a blog is that students can take full advantage of the wealth of resources available on the Internet by actually publishing their own work online. Students can also read and comment on other children’s blogs within their MGS grade level.

So far, we each 5th grade tech class has posted a group post, and are now practicing "commenting" on either those blogs or one of the posts from myself or one of the 5th grade teachers. We have talked about the qualities of EXCELLENT commenting - positive, adding to the conversation, correct punctuation and grammar, about a paragraph in length. Even our principal and band instructor have commented on our posts!!! The students are VERY excited to share their comments through blogging!

We will be using a variety of subject matter to guide the students in their blogging, as well as incorporating excellent writing techniques! Our goal is to have 3 EXCELLENT comments before being given permission to blog an original post to our classroom blog. Many of the students are well on the way to earning this privilege! Below are the conditions that students have agreed to in order to participate in our blogging project.

Blogging Terms and Conditions
1. Students using blogs are expected to act safely by keeping personal information out of their posts. You agree to not post or give out your family name, password, user name, email address, home address, school name, city, country or other information that could help someone locate or contact you in person. You may share your interests, ideas and preferences.
2. Students using blogs agree to not share their user name or password with anyone besides their teachers and parents. You agree to never log in as another student.
3. Students using blogs are expected to treat blog spaces as classroom spaces. Speech that is inappropriate for class is not appropriate for your blog. While we encourage you to engage in debate and conversation with other bloggers, we also expect that you will conduct yourself in a manner reflective of a representative of this school.
4. Student blogs are to be a forum for student expression. However, they are first and foremost a tool for learning, and as such will sometimes be constrained by the various requirements and rules of classroom teachers. Students are welcome to post on any school-appropriate subject.
5. Students blogs are to be a vehicle for sharing student writing with real audiences. All blogs are proofread by the classroom teacher before being posted on the MGS student blog
6. Students using blogs take good care of the computers by not downloading or installing any software without permission, and not clicking on ads or competitions.
7. Students who do not abide by these terms and conditions may lose their opportunity to take part in this project.

Is my home internet a safe place?

Adapted from an article from StaySafe Online

Many families have a computer in their home. We store valuable information there, such as tax records, banking information, and lists of contacts. In addition, we often keep music, family photos, and other items of sentimental value. Losing this information to a cyber attack would be devastating, so what can home users do to reduce the odds?

* Use a suite of automatically updating security tools that includes anti-spyware, firewall and anti-virus software.
* Be sure your operating system and Web browser are set to automatically update.
* Use long, complex passwords for both your computer and your network router that include numbers, symbols and letters, and change them periodically.
* Maintain vigilance online and be skeptical about giving up personal information.
* Turn off your computer when you are not using it.
* Talk to your kids about good online safety and security habits, including protecting their personal information and their reputation. Let them know that they can come to you if anything they see on the computer makes them uncomfortable.
* Regularly back up your data either online or to an external media source (and store in a secure location).

By implementing these practices into your routine, you are doing your part in making the Internet safer for you, your family, and your community.

MUSIC is good for your BRAIN!

Music 'Tones the Brain,' Improves Learning

By Anne Lyon
-----Summary of an article by Rachael Rettner, LiveScience Staff Writer

Learning to play a musical instrument changes the brain, leading to a slew of potential benefits, including improved learning and understanding of language.
Studies suggest connections made between brain cells during musical training can aid in other forms of communication, such as speech, reading and understanding a foreign language.

"The effect of music training suggests that, akin to physical exercise and its impact on body fitness, music is a resource that tones the brain for auditory fitness," the researchers say.

Musical Brains

A musician's ear must be particularly attuned to musical sounds, timing and quality. Studies have shown such training leads to changes in the brain's auditory system. For instance, pianists show more brain activity in their auditory cortex — the part of the brain responsible for processing sounds — than non-musicians in response to hearing piano notes.

Musicians also have larger brain volumes in areas important for playing a musical instrument, including motor and auditory regions. Music and speech have quite a bit in common. They both use pitch and timing to get information across, and both require memory and attention skills to process.

Studies show children with musical training have more neural activity in response to changes in pitch during speech than those without such training. An enhanced ability to detect changes in pitch might help musicians better judge emotion in speech or distinguish a statement from a question. Musically trained children have better vocabularies and reading abilities than children who don't have this musical education.

The musically trained may also fare better when learning a foreign language. Musicians are better able to put together sound patterns into words for a foreign language.

Distinguishing speech from noise

Musicians can also better understand speech in a noisy environment, studies show, an ability likely due to the fact that they must learn to distinguish specific sounds within melodies.

Musical training might help children with certain learning disorders, such as dyslexia, who are particularly susceptible to the harmful effects of background noise, according to the review article. "Music training seems to strengthen the same neural processes that often are deficient in individuals with developmental dyslexia or who have difficulty hearing speech in noise," the researchers say.

Music is very important in our lives. It is frequently underestimated and thought of as "easy" or "play time," but it's not that at all. Students frequently appear to be having fun while they are making music because music IS fun (though not easy). Music can portray any mood, and it takes a special, interested person in order to make it good. Music is very important to education.

Congress sings God Bless America 9-11-01

Congress spontaneously breaks into "God Bless America" on steps of capitol at 9/11 news conference

We Will Never Forget!

Today is a day that many of us will never forget...we will remember where we were on September 11, 2001 - the moment our country was attacked by terrorists.

On that Tuesday morning, 19 terrorists from the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda hijacked four passenger jets. The hijackers intentionally piloted two of those planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, into the North and South towers of the World Trade Center complex in New York City; both towers collapsed within two hours.

The hijackers also intentionally crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and intended to pilot the fourth hijacked jet, United Airlines Flight 93, into the United States Capitol Building[2] in Washington, D.C.; however, the plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania after its passengers attempted to take control of the jet from the hijackers.

Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks, including the 246 civilians and 19 hijackers aboard the four planes, none of whom survived.

Let's remember today the lives lost, the lives changed forever...our country was changed forever. The design of the 9-11 Memorial has special significance. The two reflecting pools are in the same place as the two towers once stood. The design name is "Reflecting Absence." The water constantly running and disappearing into the void signifies ongoing life.

Take a few minutes to view these 40 Powerful Images from the 9-11 Memorial.

Do you SEE the hand of GOD??

Rest. Breathe. Look around you. See the hand of God in His creation. In the beauty of the fields, in the mystery of the seasons, in the eyes of a child. HE is there, are you aware??

Reflect as you listen to Chris Tomin sing "You Do All Things Well".

Leroy Anderson's The Syncopated Clock

“A mouse trap placed on top of your alarm clock will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep”

2nd and 3rd grade music students are listening to and putting movement to Leroy Anderson's syncopated clock. The Syncopated Clock was completed in April of 1945. It is 2 minutes and 20 seconds long.

It was written in Arlington, Virginia while Anderson was stationed in Washington, D.C. in the Army and it was first performed at the Boston Pops "Army Night", May 28, 1945.

The original orchestral form of The Syncopated Clock was first recorded on June 18, 1950 in analog mono sound by Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops. It was first recorded by the composer in analog mono sound on September 11, 1950. The Syncopated Clock was re-recorded in stereo analog sound by the composer on June 26, 1959.

When Leroy Anderson was composing The Syncopated Clock, he came up with the title first!
..."because it incorporated an idea that I thought could be expressed in music. I noticed of course as everyone has, that there have been hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands, of tunes about clocks. It suddenly struck me that all these clocks were regular clocks, such as you hear everywhere. No one had written a musical composition based on a syncopated clock, that is a clock that beats to a syncopated rhythm. And the idea struck me as an attractive one, and I then sat down and wrote the music to with the title."---Leroy Anderson

Here's a video of the composition with a great view of the percussionist - an important member of the orchestra for this particular piece!!

ABC MUSIC & ME!!!

“Words are the pen of the heart, but music is the pen of the soul.”

― Shneur Zalman

Today the MGS Kindergarten students will begin a curriculum entitled, "ABC Music & Me" Students who were in Mrs. Witt's preschool were introduced to this program already! We have used ABC Music & Me at MGS for several years now, and the children love it!

ABC Music & Me is a research-based early childhood curriculum that uses bundled, thematic
30-minute lessons to help young children learn important language, listening, and social skills. This program was created by Kindermusik International. Through songs, rhymes, stories, and activities, this program:

**Improves early language development, pre-literacy, and word recognition
**Strengthens fine-motor, gross-motor, and locomotor skills
**Cultivates sharing, self-regulation, and self-control
**Develops the whole child

If you have a Kindergarten student in your home, ask them about it!

Pinterest....for teachers??

YES! Pinterest for Teachers! I think that what I like most about Pinterest is that it is visual and creative. I can quickly scan one of my "boards" to find what I am looking for. And it's aesthetically pleasing! I love the colors that I have captured for example on my Butterfly Board, or my Garden and Outdoors board. But more importantly, I have a collection of ideas, sorted and categorized the way that I want them to be, the way that is most useful to me!

I have found ideas for lesson plans, whole brain teaching, technology in the music classroom, ideas for classroom arrangement, organization, and classroom decorating. Pinterest is a great way to connect with others who might not be connected with you on Facebook (although many are!).

Have you ever considered using Pinterest for a student project? What a great, creative way for student groups to collaborate!

Of course, my Pinterest boards are not TOTALLY education oriented! Butterflies, cooking, gardening, photography, beauty, and holidays are a few of the other boards that I have created.

You can choose to "follow" another "pinner" - either by specific board or all of their boards if you like! And others WILL follow you too! Here's a great page on Karen Cox's Pre-Kinders blog that will give you more detailed information if you are brand new to Pinterest. Check it out!

If you would like to follow me on Pinterest, there's a button just to the right of this post for you to click! I hope you do! The graphic below will give you more ideas on how teachers collaborate in a Creative way through Pinterest!

Pinterest is now the third most-visited social network, Google is No. 4, and Instagram is No. 11, in the markets Experian measures — which are North America, Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore and the U.K.

A year ago, Pinterest was No. 188, Google was No. 56 and Instagram was No. 609.

Remember those Lyrics!

Music students are continuing to review and learn the lyrics to our National Anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner. Many of the older children are pretty good at remembering the lyrics, while the Kindergarten and First Graders have more of a challenge! All students are excellent at showing respect for our Flag as they stand and sing (as much as they can remember!) of our National Anthem. We also stress other ways to show respect such as hands on our hearts, hats off, no visiting etc. The Kindergarten and First Grade students colored their very own flag the other day. It's unique in that the lyrics to the first verse of the Star-Spangled Banner is printed on the stripes! Did you know that Frances Scott Key actually wrote FIVE verses for the Star-Spangled Banner? Here are a few shots of our "lyrical flags"!

"Now I know my ABC's, next time won't you sing with me?"

Kindergarten students are working on recognizing and ordering their ABC's! In technology class, we are learning how to use our mouse to drag and drop the ABC's into the correct order on the page! Here's the link to ABC ORDER so that your child can practice at home!

In music, we are singing (of course!) our ABC's. One video that we enjoy watching and singing along with is the ABC Song by Kids Camp, shown below.

Star Assessments This Week!

This week, we will be giving Star Enterprise Assessments to students in Grades 1-6. Subject areas covered in these assessments are Reading and Math. Since each classroom has technology class in the lab twice a week, assessments are giving during this time period.

STAR Enterprise assessments adjust to each student’s unique responses, pinpointing student achievement levels quickly and efficiently. Using a very large student-response database, Renaissance Learning develops accurate predictive statistics, alignments to state and Common Core standards, measure student growth, and learning progressions for detailed instructional planning guidance.

These assessments are taking 3 times during the school year....at the beginning, middle and end. We hope to more accurately gauge growth by comparing student progress relative to students of similar achievement levels. STAR Assessments’ Student Growth Percentiles are viewable by district, school, grade, or class. In addition to Student Growth Percentiles, the Growth Report displays other key growth indicators such as grade equivalency, percentile rank, and instructional reading level.

Using information from these assessments, school administrators and teachers can better identify best practices that are having a significant educational impact on student growth. These tests are aligned to the Common Core State Standards and state-specific standards so teachers can assess standards mastery in order to help identify students at risk, and thereby intervene early.

For more detailed information on what your child's Star Assessment is all about check out the Parent's Guide to Star Assessments.

As for me and my house, WE WILL SERVE THE LORD!

"But if you refuse to serve the LORD, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD."--Joshua 24:15

Choices. They are everywhere. What shall I have to eat? Which movie to watch? Where to go on vacation? What career path to follow? Should I leave my husband/wife? Can I get by with cheating on taxes this year? As John Waller expresses in the video below, "Like sheep, we have all gone astray, we must choose this day whom we would serve."

Some choices have greater impact on our lives than others. And yet, I know that I can have confidence in my choices if at the crux of my being, I have chosen the Lord Jesus as my Savior. For that is the MOST important choice I have in my life. All other choices will flow out of that one decision that I have made...to put Christ as the center of my life, at the center of my choices.

Take a few moments today to envelop the words of this song into your heart. Choose. Today.

"Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?"--Francis Scott Key

In music class, we have been learning about the history behind the writing of the Star-Spangled Banner. It was quite the battle that Francis Scott Key witnessed in September of 1814! It was dark, he could only watch the battle from afar...wondering, searching with each canon explosion for a glimpse of the flag so dear. Would our troops be victorious? Was the flag still there? And then, dawn -- and the flag was still flying! The pride and joy he felt in that glorious moment of knowing that Old Glory survived was his inspiration for the writing of the verses of what is now our National Anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner.

Many performance of the Star-Spangled Banner can be found, of course. Here is one for you to watch and enjoy!

"What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?"

Create-Inspire-Risk-Dream-Adventure-Greatness-DEFY THE IMPOSSIBLE!!

"What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?
"
Vincent van Gogh

This video by Regina Dugan was made when Dugan was the director of DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. She now serves in an executive role at Google. You might find her bio interesting..

Her premise is not that we WON'T fail at things - failure in indeed part of life. So, what stops us from pursuing our dream? It's the FEAR of FAILURE. It is in failing, that we learn, that we do better. Yet, why are we so afraid of encountering failure? Do I believe in myself enough to know that despite failure, I will learn, go on and do great things?

What is your dream? What is your passion? Watch, be inspired!

SING!!

“There's no half-singing in the shower, you're either a rock star or an opera diva.”
― Josh Groban

Singing is a way to express ourselves! Our mothers soothed us with singing when we were babes, we learned our abc's through singing, we expressed our teen angst through song! As adults, do we sing in our everyday lives? Do you hum a favorite tune while preparing a meal? Do you sing nursery rhymes with your children when playing together? We don't have to be a rock star or an opera diva to sing. Just DO IT!
Consider the following, and I hope you spend time singing today!

Social Media Saving Lives - Two Words At A Time

"The biggest fear we face in the world today is the fear of being insignificant." ~ Angela Maiers

Please read this post by Jure Klepic. PLEASE read, understand, and watch. The author has been to the point of contemplating suicide. He did not feel that he mattered to anyone - his community, his family, himself. That is, until he heard Angela Maiers TEDX Talk about the YOU MATTER Manifesto.

As a teacher, as a parent, as a colleague at work, we need to affirm to those in our life that "YOU MATTER." Through technology, social networking, we are connected to hundred, thousands of people each day. Yet, it is the TOUCH, the VOICE, the LOOK of another individual that tells me that I MATTER. A post of Facebook does not fully communicate to another how important they are to me, to our family, to our community.

Take notice of the person beside you in line at the grocery store, the child asking you to read a book, the church member who is sitting alone....tell them "YOU MATTER"!! Make a difference.

As well as reading and viewing the video by Jure Klepic, I encourage you to check out the YOU MATTER Manifesto by Angela Maiers.

Saturday Fun!

The things we can do!!!

This week in technology class we visited about the places all around us that we can use some form of technology. From watching TV, to using an iPad, to cooking on the stove, technology is infused in many aspects of our lives. Internet is available for everybody now, a given for schools and businesses. Children today don't even know there is (was) such a thing as a long-distance phone call. Cell phones are the norm now for children as well as adults. And phones are not JUST for talking! We can take photos, play games, text, use it as a gps, search the internet or scan a bar code!

Blogging, social networks such as Face Book, LinkedIn, Google+ are growing exponentially every day. Many people do not even have a television in their home. They view programs on their laptops. One major change this decade has come in the way we use applications. Ten years ago, we had applications installed on our computer desktops. Now, there are a myriad of apps available online from web mail, to photo editing, to case management - most of which is free!

The question is not IF our children will be using technology, but HOW. As parents and educators, we strive to model responsible behavior in the many areas of technology. A person does not automatically know responsible etiquette online. It needs to be modeled.

Here's a cute video that I viewed at the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) Conference that I attended with several other staff members from Bennett County Schools last June. It points out how fast things are changing in the world of technology. Ever hear of Blockbuster Video????

Thursday Techie Tip: Is Good Posture at the Computer REALLY Important??

YES! It surely is! "One of the key elements in ensuring that people can work comfortably and effectively is good posture." --Celine Mckeown.

From the first day of Kindergarten onward, I stress the importance of good posture while at the computer keyboard. By not sitting in the correct position,it is easy to end up with back, neck or knee pain. Over the years, this could easily turn into Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Here are a few tips to remember:

**Push your hips as far back as they can go in the chair. Adjust the seat height so that your feet are flat on the floor and your knees equal to, or slightly lower than, your hips.

**Your keyboard should be situated directly in front of you, and be centered with your body.

**Adjust the keyboard height so that your shoulders are relaxed, your elbows are in a slightly open position, and your wrists and hands are straight.

**The wrist rest should only be used to rest the palms of the hands between keystrokes and not while typing.

**Adjust the monitor and source documents so that your neck is in a neutral, relaxed position. Center the monitor directly in front of you, above your keyboard.

**Sit at least an arm's length away from the screen.

**Keep your fingers relaxed while typing and using a mouse.

**Use a soft touch on the keyboard instead of pounding keys with unnecessary force.

**Avoid holding a pen or anything else in your hands while you type or use the mouse.

**Exercise your hand by pushing on top of your fingers, and using backward resistance movements. This simple exercise will prevent you from developing carpal tunnel finger problems in the future. Even if you don’t have any problems right now, you may prevent pain later in life by doing a few good exercises

PETE THE CAT...is back in S C H O O L!!

The music students will be singing and reading the Pete The Cat series in music this week. If you haven't heard of this terrific series of books, they are worth looking into! Pete is a cool cat, and since our school motto this year is "MGS - Where the Learning is HOT and the Kids are COOL!", he fits in perfectly! Things do not always go well for our friend Pete. In fact, sometimes the new things in school can be downright scary! But does Pete worry??? GOODNESS NO! Pete has learned that no matter what, in the end, "It's ALL GOOD!" Here's a little snippet of our favorite book!

Back To School!

It's back to school for Bennett County Teachers!!! We have been meeting with our colleagues today discussing a variety of "back to school" issues, as well as getting our classrooms ready for the Martin Grade School open house tonight from 5-7 pm!

Children will arrive excited and with smiles on their faces Wednesday morning! I know for myself, I need to pay special attention to getting to bed at a good time, so that I don't wimp out after lunch! I am also going to be faithful to regular exercise and healthy eating to get the best out of every day!

We will be sharpening up our keyboarding skills in Technology these first few weeks. Then students will be moving on to a variety of skills including, working with the programs found in Microsoft Office, blogging dos and don'ts and and looking at the advances in technology that has happened even in their short lifetimes!

In music, we will be moving, singing, and beginning to learn more about the writing of our national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key. Our national anthem was written in the midst of the War of 1812 on September 14, 1814. Stay tuned for more information about this historical time in our nation's history.

Have a great week everyone!

Whole Brain Teaching - WOW!

“Tell me, I forget. Show me, I remember. Involve me, I understand.” -- Ancient Chinese Proverb. This quote is the core of what Whole Brain Teaching is all about and what traditional education is not. WBT compels the student to ACTIVITY, to INVOLVE themselves in their own learning! Through WBT prompting, students are compelled to ENTER the conversation with WBT techniques – to THINK CRITICALLY about what they are doing! Students are INVESTED in their education! Students are VALUED as they engage in their own learning as well as COLLABORATING with others.

As I focused in on our WBT class tonight, one of Chris’ opening lines intrigued me: “The more you complain, the steeper the mountain becomes.” As is the case when a person literally climbs a mountain, someone has probably climbed that mountain before you, and left marks to make your journey easier. A person needs to look for those places to hang a rope, trails that have been made, branches broken along the way. Yes, this climb is MY responsibility – but I will also look to the experiences and wisdom of others to make my own journey easier.

During our orientation, I was an ENGAGED learner. Chris was a MODEL of what he expects of us. He ENGAGED me through his gestures and eye contact. Through the online ticker, I was encouraged to PARTICIPATE in the conversation. I was CHALLENGED to THINK CRITICALLY about my own teaching style – about what I do well already, as well as areas for growth. I was ENCOURAGED to explore our topic of WBT and then SHARE with others.

I look forward to climbing this mountain with the Whole Brain Teaching community! To learn more about Whole Brain Teaching, check out their website. The online certification class begins June 21!

Off to Pittsburgh~!

Tomorrow morning I'm "leavin' on a jet plane.." to Pittsburgh, PA! Going to meet up with all my musical buddies for the AOSA Professional Development Conference! I always look forward to going - I learn so many new things, and am always re-energized to come back to the classroom and share with the students!
